After having absolutely no expectations for the 49ers last season (seriously, before the season I would have been content with eight wins), I have high expectations for this team in 2020 after the incredible turnaround season they had last year.
I was impressed with how they drafted, as I feel like they filled the obvious holes in their roster. They showed me that they are still in “win now” mode and that they are serious at making another Super Bowl run. Which they better be, because I am still bitter about the incredible choke job in last year’s Super Bowl.
The 2020 official schedule has been released. Below are my week-by-week predictions for how the season will go for the San Francisco 49ers in 2020.
Week 1: Arizona Cardinals—Sunday 9/13, 1:25 P.M. PT
The 49ers will get the first crack at the new-look Arizona Cardinals in Week 1. D-Hop, Kyler, Kenyan Drake and Christian Kirk, that offense looks scary on paper. However, Week 1 games are typically sloppy, and the execution is not all that great. So, while I do expect an ugly game, the 49ers have shown that they are capable of winning ugly.
Week 2: @ New York Jets—Sunday 9/20, 10:00 A.M. PT
This should be a game in which the 49ers handle business. Sam Darnold will be “seeing ghosts” again having to deal with the 49ers defense. I think this game is a blowout. Side note: I’ll be looking forward to seeing Frank Gore again, just because he was my favorite 49er growing up.
Week 3: @ New York Giants—Sunday 9/27, 10:00 A.M. PT
Having to play both New York teams early on in the season and back-to-back is the most ideal situation for the 49ers, that way they do not have to travel back to New York at any point in the season. This too should be a game in which the 49ers handle their business and make live a living hell for Daniel Jones.
Week 4: Philadelphia Eagles—Sunday Night Foottball 10/4, 5:20 P.M. PT
The first primetime game of the year! The Eagles stunk last year, which was not entirely their fault, yet somehow found their way into the playoffs. Assuming that they are healthy at the wide receiver position, that will help them in 2020, but the 49ers are still going to take care of them at Levi Stadium.
Week 5: Miami Dolphins—Sunday 10/11, 1:05 P.M. PT
The Matt Breida Revenge Game? Doubt it. This will be Tua’s “welcome to the NFL” game as the defensive line will be throwing him into the grass for most of the afternoon.
Week 6: Los Angeles Rams—Sunday Night Football 10/18, 5:20 P.M. PT
The first NFC West matchup! The Rams could very well be the weakest team in the NFC West as of right now, which is not necessarily a bad thing considering how good the other three teams look on paper. Without Gurley or Cooks, this offense will feel the wrath of their absence and the 49ers will most definitely take advantage of that. 49ers will remain undefeated.
Week 7: @ New England Patriots—Sunday 10/25, 1:25 P.M. PT
Jimmy G’s homecoming. This will be the first time Jimmy G will be back at Gillette Stadium since he was traded in 2017. I think he will have a game that is close to flawless. Also, the 49ers defense just might benefit from not having to face the GOAT QB on the other side of them, you never know. This should be an easy win for the Niners.
Side Note: By this time, people will most likely be complaining about the fact that “the 49ers haven’t played anyone good.”
Ok, back to my predictions.
Week 8: @ Seattle Seahawks—Sunday 11/1, 1:25 P.M. PT
The 49ers won in Seattle for the first time since 2011. However, no matter how bad a Seattle team may be, I will never count them out when they have Russell Wilson playing quarterback. The 49ers will play well enough to win, but I have a feeling that this game will have Russell Wilson late game heroics written all over it and the Seahawks will give the 49ers their first loss of the season..again
Week 9: Green Bay Packers—Thursday Night Football 11/5, 5:20 P.M. PT
The Packers went 13-3 last season, but, as crazy as it sounds, I am still not sold on them after what I saw from them in the Primetime game against the 49ers and the NFC Championship game last season. They also have not made much noise in the offseason. The 49ers will be coming off a short week, which does matter, but after coming off an expected loss, I expect them to come out hungry in this game and win this game. Maybe Jimmy G will throw the ball more than six times? We’ll have to see.
Week 10: @ New Orleans Saints—Sunday 11/15, 1:25 P.M. PT
The 49ers had the Saints so shook that they had to steal Emmanuel Sanders away from the 49ers. Just kidding. On a more serious note, after watching Jimmy G light up The Dome last season, I am confident that he will be able to repeat that performance and possibly have a fully healthy defense to help him out a little bit this time? The Dome is a tough place to play, but the 49ers have shown that they live for these types of games. That is why I am picking them to win this one.
Week 11: BYE WEEK
Thank The Lord that they have a later bye week this season. With everything kind of uncertain with COVID-19, a later bye week will benefit the 49ers, should they be in playoff contention.
Week 12: @ Los Angeles Rams—Sunday 11/29, 1:05 P.M. PT
Remember how the 49er fans just kind of took over The Coliseum the first time these two teams met last season? Given that fans will be allowed to be in the stadium during this time, that is how I expect this game to be and the 49ers will win.
Week 13: Buffalo Bills—Monday Night Football 12/7, 5:15 P.M. PT
The Buffalo Bills made some noise in the offseason with the acquisition of Stefon Diggs. Adding him to this already talented offense led by Josh Allen will be a huge test for this 49ers defense. The Bills defense will be a test for the 49ers offense as well. I have the Bills catching the 49ers slipping in this game, which will lead to more Jimmy G slander, I am sure of it.
Week 14: Washington Redskins—Sunday 12/13, 1:25 P.M. PT
Another short week for the 49ers, but I think they will make up for their loss against the Bills and take it out on the Redskins, who are a young, inexperienced team.
Week 15: @ Dallas Cowboys—Sunday Night Football 12/20, 5:20 P.M. PT
Jason Garrett isn’t calling plays for the Dallas Cowboys anymore, so I expect the team to be better. Dak should be on his A game, Zeke should be in shape and three wide receivers in Lamb, Cooper and Gallup should give the 49ers defense all they can handle. The 49ers have shown that they play their best games under the bright lights (except for last year in the Super Bowl.) I think this game goes down to the wire and the 49ers pull it out.
Week 16: @ Arizona Cardinals—TBD ( 12/26 or 12/27)
Remember how I said that Week 1 games are sloppy, and the execution is not that great. Well, I expect the Cardinals to be in sync by Week 16 and given that this game will be played at Arizona, I think that the Cardinals will hand the 49ers their third loss in this game.
Week 17: Seattle Seahawks—Sunday 1/3, 1:25 P.M. PT
The 49ers are going to win this game the same way they won in Week 17 last season. Hopefully not, that would give me a heart attack. But this will be a close game because of Russell Wilson, I think that the 49ers will have a game plan to at least try and slow him down and close out the season in winning style.
These are my predictions for this season. I really believe the 49ers can go 13-3 and remain the team to beat in the NFC. They owe Niner Faithful another Super Bowl run, so I am hoping they can make that happen.
Here are my final thoughts on the 2020:
- The Dallas game should have been scheduled for Thanksgiving
- Thankful for less 10:00 A.M. games this season
- Six playoff teams on the schedule this year, five in a row in Weeks 6-13, that will be fun
- I fully expect the Seattle games to be flexed to Primetime
- The Bye week coming in Week 11, as oppose to Week 4 like last season, is super convenient
I hope you have enjoyed reading my predictions, as I have enjoyed making them. Whether or not you are a 49er fan, please let me know your thoughts. I love a good argument, so let me know if you disagree with any of my predictions
